note: this post contributed by Joe Veres, on the outrageous infringements of basic human rights of Hungarians living in Southern Slovakia

To: EU Agency for Fundamental Rights,
The INSANE Treaty of Trianon of 1920 is the underlying cause of the language issues being experienced in Slovakia today. That unjust treaty was a collective punishment of the innocent civilian population for the sins of the Austro-Hungarian leaders. The treaty of Trianon was a barbaric act inflicted upon ethnic Hungarians which decimated Hungary by taking away 66% of her territory and civilian population. The northern part of Hungary (Felvidék) suddenly became the southern part of a newly formed Slovakia.

520,000 ethnic Hungarians suddenly became stranded in a foreign country. To this day no one can give a plausible reason as to why the Slovak-Hungarian border was not drawn based on the language boundary of the region. There is no justification for this punishing act which forced ethnic Hungarians to become a minority in Slovakia. They have been subjected to discrimination and abuse by ethnic Slovaks and their government ever since Trianon.

Of course the ethnic Hungarians of the Felvidék who have lived there for 1,100 years will continue to speak in their native Hungarian language, in spite of that treaty and in spite of the humiliating and discriminatory Slovak Language Laws. Ethnic Hungarians can not be expected to change their native language to Slovak just because of TRIANON and the new Slovak language laws. To expect them to do so is once again inflicting collective punishment against them and is humiliating and discriminatory. What sins did they commit that this new form of collective punishment is levied against them?

The Slovak language laws infringe on the human rights of the unfortunate Hungarians of the Felvidék who were punished without reason. This is an opportunity for the E.U. to correct the gross mistakes made in 1920 by granting autonomy to the Southern Slovakian region known as the Felvidék. This will solve the Slovak government's demand for their state language adherence, and also solve the human rights issue for the ethnic Hungarians living in the Felvidék. The European Union must act to prevent further abuse of the ethnic Hungarians by the Slovak government by giving the Felvidék autonomy, as it has for Kosovo!
